Weeknote #58 (20251026-20251101)

meta

New job, week one: mostly kept my head above water, I think? Survived. As usual with new jobs, it was pretty all-consuming, so this week’s update is probably going to be on the thin side…

read

  • Sharpening the Saw with Emacs

It’s both carthatic to know that I improved my overall computing situation, and it’s a source of joy to do it in this particular way. There’s joy in the process and outcome both. I did find that sharpening my chisels and blades has a similar effect – only with Emacs, because I like computer stuff even more, the tool maintenance is so much more fun.

  • Nick Offerman Told Me That Swinging a Hammer Might Change My Life

“When you drive a nail successfully, you feel like an absolute superhero. It’s incredible.”

  • The hardest working font in Manhattan

I’ve had this bookmarked to read basically since the day it was released, and I finally got around to it — if you like type or fonts or just admire a good otaku-level deep dive on something, you’ll enjoy this one.

The font and its siblings just show up on the job site without pretense, without ego, without wasting time on introductions. Gorton doesn’t aspire to be admired, celebrated, treasured; it’s meant to do some hard work and never take credit for it. It feels like it has always been a font, and never a typeface.
