Weeknote #43 (20250713-20250719)

meta

In less than 30 days, Mx18 and TheWife will start driving to take Mx18 to college, and it keeps getting dusty where ever I happen to be…

did

  • Spent more time hacking on my keyboard.io firmwares — I’m pretty much finished with the Model100 and Model01 ones (in so much as I’m using both on a daily basis and not having any issues), and I’ve got the basics of the Preonic building. I need to continue noodling on the key layout; my desire for symmetric modifer keys in the bottom row means a few things are a bit more cramped than I’d like; I also need to figure out how to make SHIFT-FUN a different layer than just FUN, which might be tricky
  • I re-seasoned all the wooden spoons and spatulas in the kitchen, which was strangely satisfactory. Recommended for the cooks in the audience
  • I hosted the July Hack Salem on Wednesday; we have a lovely talk about the Recurse Center from fractalkitty
  • I spent way more time than I wanted to this week trying to get a couple different pieces of bioinformatics software to play together nicely in a container image without resorting to Conda, and fucking hell… (further cursing redacted; area man’s desire to become a goat farmer sets new record highs)
  • Saturday was Parking Lot Cheesesteak Day at local fave Epilogue, so I of course went over for a steak, and had a great time chatting with random other folks in the parking lot. I always seem to meet a great new person any time I go over there…

exercise & shoulder recovery

  • Sunday: nothing
  • Monday: morning stretches
  • Tuesday: morning stretches, afternoon gym
  • Wednesday: morning run, followed by stretches
  • Thursday: morning stretches, afternoon gym
  • Friday: morning stretches, afternoon nothing
  • Saturday: nothing

read

  • I’ve been accumulating collecting Field Notes for a quite a few years now, so it’s not surprising that I enjoyed “How Field Notes went from side project to cult notebook

Draplin, meanwhile, still seems a bit incredulous that the company exists in the first place. “The biggest, funnest part about this thing—number one, we didn’t lose any money. Isn’t that cool? I would have been okay if we did,” he says. But, “This can exist. This happened. [We’ve done] it for almost 20 years. It’s fucking amazing. I’ll tell you what . . . it exceeded my dreams.”

listened

  • Randomly picked Grade’s first album Under the Radar back up, and it still slaps – check out “Seamless”

watched

  • finished Landman
  • started re-watching Criminal Minds
  • watched Timbers eek out a 1-1 time against the Loons — nailbiter!

cooked

  • grilled pork chops, caprese salad on Monday
  • grilled chicken Caesar salad on Tuesday
    • I butterflied the chicken breasts before grilling them this time, and that was a pretty good idea!
  • grilled steak tacos on Friday
