Weeknote #32 (20250427-20250503)

meta

Tuesday of this week marked the completion of my first year at my current job — still pretty happy with it!

did

  • TheWife and I visited Brooks on Sunday to pick up our wine club allocation, and then she headed over to Bend for a few days for a professional conference while I did a couple days of solo dad duty — which is much easier than it used to be!
  • Sammy Genehack was mysteriously sick for about a day and a half — something she ate seems to have disagreed with her, but she seems to have bounced back, none the worse for wear
  • I took Friday off, for no real reason — one year work anniversary, maybe? — and it was great

exercise & shoulder recovery

  • Sunday: played hooky
  • Monday: morning stretches, afternoon C25K W2D1
  • Tuesday: morning stretches, afternoon gym (shoulder stuff, EZbar curls)
  • Wednesday: morning stretches, afternoon C25K W2D2
  • Thursday:morning stretches, afternoon gym (shoulder stuff, Zottman curls)
  • Friday: skipped stretches, afternoon C25K W2D3
  • Saturday: skipped stretches, late morning gym (shoulder stuff, EZbar curls)

read

  • Get Weird And Disappear:

In the past year, I’ve seen people have huge impacts at companies by exerting some bravery. This sometimes means getting a bully fired, sometimes it means getting the first tech project to work smoothly in a decade. In some of these cases, the person involved was made redundant shortly afterwards for interfering with people’s selfish political aims, and other times they were promoted for actually giving a damn (and yes, sometimes for unknowingly helping someone else’s selfish political aims). But all of them went in willing to put something on the line. A huge number of employees will venture nothing for their beliefs, and while that is fine or whatever, bla bla bla, they have kids, they’re also going to be largely ineffective because they won’t change anything big, because big change is novel and weird, and novel and weird might get you noticed, and getting noticed means something is going to happen to you.

listened

watched

  • The Wire, pushing through S4. Re-watching some of the bits with the school kids is rough y’all.

cooked

  • grilled spatchcocked chicken and caprese salad, Monday
  • grilled steak tacos, Tuesday
  • grilled sausages, Wednesday
  • grilled albacore with chimichurri, Thursday
  • grilled sirloin steak, Saturday

Yes, grilling season is well and truly upon us, and it is amazing!
