Weeknote #30 (20250413-20250419)
meta
Saturday of this week was Mx18’s senior prom. All these things keep happening, and I keep remembering that this time next year, they won’t be around.
did
- Watched the Timbers beat SKC 4-2 on Sunday, which was nice
- Work this week was a whole lot of futzing about with the rubella dataset, interspersed with meetings
- Watched an underwhelming Thorns loss to Seattle on Friday
- Fave local restaurant Epilogue did one of their parking-lot cheesesteak events on Saturday, so I had a cheesesteak for lunch, standing in their parking lot, shooting the shit with staff members and their partners — excellent afternoon, actually!
- …and then watched the Timbers get held to a draw by LAFC on Saturday night, which was less nice …but still a solid match. It’s starting to feel like the team is coming together
- I’m sure I did something else but damned if I can remember what it was
exercise & shoulder recovery
- Sunday: morning stretches
- Monday: morning stretches, afternoon gym (shoulder stuff, EZ bar curls, Bulgarian split squats)
- Tuesday:morning stretches
- Wednesday:morning stretches, afternoon gym (shoulder stuff, deadlifts, Zottman curls)
- Thursday: morning stretches, afternoon walk at Minto (4 mi, 78 minutes)
- Friday: morning stretches
- Saturday: gym in the morning (shoulder stuff, EZ bar bicep curls, Bulgarian split squats)
I’ve gotten to the point where my lack of cardio is turning into a problem in a few different dimensions, so next week I’m going to shift to M/W/F running — time to do Couch to 5K for the umpteenth time! — and shift gym to a T/R/S schedule. Wish me luck.

I’ve been a remote worker for …let’s just leave it at “over a decade”, and pretty much everything in this one is, in my informed and strongly-held opinion, spot on:
You can create as many Slack channels as you want, but all that is worthless if you don’t build the culture where it’s okay to use them. Companies I’ve worked at before always had the bosses and managers post as much memes and bullshit as everyone, if not more – which is a natural extension of higher-ups spending more time socializing in the kitchen than anyone else, and one could argue that that’s their job – to know what’s up in the ranks, how people feel, and making them productive.
watched

- More Ted Lasso S3
