Weeknote #12 (20241117-20241123)
meta
We’re very much easing into the winter holidays/end-of-the-year phase around here, and I’m not at all unhappy about it.
did
- At work this week, I finalized my work on the yellow-fever dataset, which felt good. (There’s a link in the PR to look at a preview version of the changes.)
- We had the November Hack Salem meeting on Wednesday, with a nice talk about The Well-Architected Cloud
- I arranged for a local knife sharpener to come out and tune up all of our knives; was pleased I could get that done right before the big cooking season starts
read
- I’m continuing to grind my way through City of Roses Vol I; looking forward to getting to the end of it
listened
- Great new acoustic version of “That Much Further West” from Ben and Rick — one of my all-time favorite Lucero songs, and I love the piano bits in this version
watched
- We’re continuing to binge our way through NCIS in the evenings — up to season 19 and still trying to adjust to Bill Frickin’ Lumbergh being in change of the team
- I’m still watching Criminal Minds when rowing; up to season 6
- This was a soccer-heavy weekend, with the NWSL championship on Saturday (congrats Orlando!), followed up a Western Conference semi-final between Seattle and LAFC
cooked
- wangs (tuesday)
- tombo (thursday; basically this recipe again, but served on a bed of spinach this time)
- steak (friday)

looking forward to
I realize it comes with a lot of baggage for people, for a wide variety of reasons, but Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far, and I’m really looking forward to spending a day preparing a delicious meal, enjoying it with family and friends, and then doing absolutely nothing for an entire long weekend.
